Research

I am an intellectual and social historian of the Islamicate world. In my ongoing second book project, I focus on the sociology of Arabic philosophy from the 12th to the 16th century with a special geographical focus on Cairo, Damascus, Tabriz and Isfahan. Sociology has so far been marginal to the study of Arabic philosophy. Building on Randall Collins' approach in The Sociology of Philosophies (1998), I analyse the scholarly networks that connected the aforementioned cultural loci and turned them into hybrid places of knowledge brokerage. Moreover, my research concentrates on Mamluk historiography, the history of slavery in Morocco, and contemporary Arab thought.
