DESCRIPTION:On this occasion\, our aim is to discuss three main points. Th
e first is the conceptual\ndistinction between indigenous slavery and serv
itude\, since while the former was\nprohibited or limited by the Catholic
King from the early days of the conquest\, the\nlatter was consolidated an
d persisted until the twentieth century.\nOur second point is precisely th
e conformation of indigenous servitude in Spanish\nhouseholds and farms. W
e will discuss the institution of the encomienda (a Spanish\nlabor system
that awarded to the conquerors the labor of non-Christian indigenous\npeop
les) proposed by the Crown of Castile\, and the problems it entailed. Fina
lly\, we will try to relate this lecture to others given in this same lect
ures series in memory of Joseph C. Miller\, in order to see the similariti
es and differences with the process of constructing dependency in Asia and
Africa\, as well as to relate it to the other lectures on Latin America.
