The Coconut Plantation Lives, German New Guinea
This research revisits Richard Thurnwald's visual notes ont indigenous plantation labourers on the former German New Guinea colony on New Britain Island now West and East New Britain Provinces in Papua New Guinea.
It looks through the notes from the otherness of textual trace using the Melanesian gaze from within the White man's gaze. It is about re- imagining the other( ness) of the plantation labourers lives as noted from the original visual studies.
The social stratification theories of Richard Thurnwald's research greatly influenced the local authorities treatment if indigenous laborers and still does today.This research discusses some of them from the strong Assymetrical Dependency (SADs ) lens in this discussion.
