Diversity in Academia
A Workshop offered by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion under Theme B "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Concepts & Practice in Academia"
Topics:
Diversity in Academia, (Post-)Colonial Knowledge Production, Equity & Representation in Research and Teaching, Intersections of Identity & Knowledge Traditions
Description and Content:
Diversity has always been an integral part of scientific inquiry and knowledge production. Yet, dominant narratives in academia have often obscured the contributions of marginalized voices, reinforcing hierarchies shaped by colonial histories, power relations, and structural inequalities. This workshop aims to critically explore the intersections of diversity and academia—highlighting both its enriching potential and the challenges it entails.
Through historical and contemporary perspectives, we will examine how different knowledge traditions, identities, and experiences have shaped academic disciplines. By engaging with concepts from postcolonial theory and critical diversity studies, participants will reflect on the power dynamics at play in research, teaching, and institutional structures. Interactive discussions and case studies will provide tools for fostering more inclusive and reflexive academic practices.
