Form Feminist Bands! – Empowering Perspectives and Practices in Academia
A Workshop offered by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion under Theme A ‘Developing Safe & Inclusive Spaces’
Topics:
History of Feminism(s), Intersectionality & Intersectional Feminisms, Gender- Based Inequalities in Academia, Self-Positioning, Empowering Practices & Resources

Description and Content:
Academic spaces, often shaped by patriarchal structures, continue to present challenges for women and other marginalized groups. From gender-based inequalities to implicit biases, navigating these environments can feel isolating and disempowering. This workshop seeks to foster solidarity, critical reflection, and collective action by exploring feminist perspectives and practices that empower individuals in academia. Through an intersectional lens, we will examine the history of feminisms, discuss gender-based disparities in academic institutions, and reflect on our own positionalities. Participants will engage in interactive discussions and collaborative exercises to develop strategies for self-empowerment, mutual support, and institutional change. By sharing resources and practices, we aim to build networks of resistance and care — our own "feminist bands" — to challenge exclusionary structures and create more inclusive, equitable academic spaces.
