Reading Between the Lines – Navigating Microaggressions and Building Transcultural Competence
A Workshop offered by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion under Theme B ‘Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Concepts & Practice in Academia’
Topics:
micro-aggressions, unconscious bias, transcultural competence, change of perspective, intersectionality & discrimination
Description and Content:
We’ve all encountered microaggressions in our daily lives. Depending on the situation and our positionalities, we may have been on either the receiving or the giving end—at times unconsciously diminishing or excluding others. Originally rooted in psychological studies as a term for transgressive behavior, "microaggressions" has since evolved into a broader concept encompassing both verbal and non-verbal practices linked to discrimination. In diverse spaces like academia, understanding and addressing these subtle yet impactful behaviors is crucial for fostering inclusive and respectful environments. This interactive workshop delves into the effects of microaggressions in both personal and professional settings, equipping participants with the tools to recognize, respond to, and prevent them. By strengthening their transcultural skills, attendees will develop practical strategies for navigating cross-cultural interactions with sensitivity and awareness. Through case studies and guided discussions, participants will gain deeper insights into unconscious biases, refine empathetic communication techniques, and cultivate a more inclusive mindset.
