This is a book about slavery within global capitalism that avoids the phrase 'modern slavery.' Not because 'modern slavery' did not exist, but because modernity is authoritarian and 'temporicidal' – it forces you to think on its own terms while flattening out the rhythms of life it directly orchestrates. If you look at 'modern slavery' through the lens of modernity, you will not be able to fully explain why black slavery emerged in the Americas, what role it played in the history of capitalism, and why it eventually fell apart.
