"Tori and Lokita" by the Dardenne Brothers (2022) depicts multiple forms of strong asymmetrical dependencies connected to migration from Africa to Europe. Two young refugees from Benin and Cameroon form a makeshift safety net for one another in the absence of blood relatives while they are facing marginalization, coerced labor, child labor, sexual exploitation, criminilization and further forms of oppression in Belgium.

The movie is part of our film and discussion series “Who’s got the Power?”, jointly organized by the BCDSS and Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn. The aim is to make the concept of strong asymmetrical dependency tangible for a wider audience through the screening and discussion of films that depict a variety of scenarios of human oppression. The audience is invited to discuss impressions and thoughts with members of the cluster, and where possible, with filmmakers.

The film screening will start at 18:30 CET, followed by a discussion at 20:00 CET. The discussion will be kick-started with input from BCDSS Professor Claudia Jarzebowski and PhD Researcher Boluwatife Akinro, as well as Professor Britta Hartmann and Lucas Curstädt of the Media Studies Department, University of Bonn. We will show the movie in its originial French version with English subtitles. The discussion will be held mainly in German, however, contributions in English are welcome, and we will translate where necessary.

Thanks to a cooperation with the Media Studies Department of Bonn University, the entire event is free of charge for everyone.
