My project aim is to invest arguments and research into the construction of class suspicion in Brazil, in the face of the increased guarantees of freedom from the 1870s onwards, during the Second Reign. Studies on idleness and class suspicion have found great acceptance in Brazilian historiography. However, it is possible to see the focus on the republican period in the study of the criminalization of idleness. When thinking about the compulsory work as the main argument in the fight against idleness, it is important to note the changes brought about by the Free Womb Law of 1871, in the sense of the emancipation of enslaved workers and the concern with the the logic of exploitation by the landlord class.
